Ten leading designers have been commissioned to develop new uses for sustainably grown and harvested materials in order to tell a unique story about the life-cycle of materials and the power of conservation and design. The featured designers and places include Yves Behar/Costa Rica; Stephen Burks/Australia; Hella Jongerius/Mexico; Maya Lin/Maine; Christien Meindertsma/Idaho; Isaac Mizrahi/Alaska; Abbott Miller/Bolivia; Ted Muehling/Micronesia; Kate Spade/Bolivia; and Ezri Tarazi/China. On view will be the prototypes, drawings, and finished product created by the designers. The exhibition is co-curated by renowned graphic designer Abbott Miller and Ellen Lupton, curator of contemporary design at Cooper-Hewitt. This is the debut venue in a national tour of the exhibition, organized by The Nature Conservancy.
Diez grandes diseñadores fueron comisionados para desarrollar nuevos usos de materiales crecidos y cultivados sustentablemente en orden de contar una historia unica acerca del ciclo de vida de tales materas y el poder de conservación del diseño. This is the second post of books that contain rich information about “biomimetic design”. This autors goes deeply in a a real simbiotic undestanding with our Earth. Words like biotechnology, fitness and biophilia are a the main themes on these.

4. From Ecocities to Living Machines (Jhon and Nancy Todd) : Since the 70s Jhon and Nancy Tood started to implement their knowledge about ecological design and biomimetics, which ones were treated as the real biotechnologies. Its application in the so-called “Living Machines” (design of miniature ecosystems that use the intrinsic skills of bacteria, plants and animals to treat wastewater of all kinds and purify it) as well as multiple patents. Within this book you will find the principles of ecodesign from the point of view of a biologist. | Desde los años 70s Jhon y Nancy Tood comenzaron a aplicar su conocimiento sobre el diseño ecológico y la biomimética, los cuales trataban como las reales biotecnologías. Su aplicación en las llamadas “Maquinas vivas” (diseño de ecosistemas en miniatura que utilizan las habilidades intrínsecas de bacterias, plantas y animales para tratar aguas residuales de todo tipo y purificarlas) así como múltiples patentes. Dentro de este libro encontraras los principios del Ecodiseño desde el punto de vista de un biólogo.

Design by Nature( Ian McHarg) : The recognized architect and urban planner Ian McHarg, integrated in this publication the concept of “fitness”, a deep word that remark that all that human creation should be adequate to the rhythms, forms and processes that exist in Nature, because we belong to this whole living system in transformation. | Ian McHarg reconocido arquitecto y urbanista, integro en esta publicación el concepto de “adecuación”, concepto que hace notar que toda aquella creación humana debe estar adecuada a los ritmos, formas y procesos que existen en la Naturaleza, ya que nosotros pertenecemos a ese conjunto viviente y en trasformación.
6. Biophilic Design (Stephen Kellert) : Biophilia- a need for humans to interact with a certain amount of other species in favor of own welfare and mental health-. A concept that was coined by E.O.Wilson, renowned for its publication of the same name, along with Stephen Kellert integrate this concept toward the creation architectural and urban planning/regional.| Biofilia: necesidad de los humanos de interactuar con una cierta cantidad de otras especies en favor del propio bienestar y de la salud mental. Un concepto que fue acuñado por E.O Wilson, reconocido pur sus publicacion del mismo nombre, junto con Stephen Kellert integran este concepto hacia la creacion arquitectonica y planeacion hurbana/regional.
From the Frank Lloyd Wright´s organicism to new futuristic concepts from Evolo today architecture begins to move away from Euclidian reticularity showing that it requires an understandign in fractal dynamism and emergence of natural systems.

Desde el organicismo de Frank Lloyd Wright hasta los nuevos conceptos futuristas inspirados por Evolo hoy la arquitectura comienza a alejarse de la reticularidad euclidiana mostrando que se requiere entender el dinamismo fractal y emergente de los sistemas naturales.
Eugene Tsui, Javier Senosiain, Michael Paulin, William McDonough, Renzo Piano y entre muchos otros arquitectos no solo integran en sus proyectos los principios ecológicos y de sustentabilidad sino que han comprendido que las construcciones requieren de una proyección mas holística estudiando las formas, materiales y la eficiencia que la naturaleza puede darnos, siendo ella el mentor infalible en la creación de un mundo confortable y simbiótico.
In a year to have created this blog, with its 20,000 visits, it is not the slightest doubt my motivation to continue posting and investigating on topics related to Biomimetics/Biomimicry. However in my walk and complementing my Master’s thesis I collide with a new and deep vision: “That, although the planet does not need us, we must begin to perceive and co-evolve with the other species”. I hope the next posts have a greater contents reflecting the real efforts that our specie makes for maintain the harmony with Nature in the projection of our complex designs and technologies.

A un año de haber creado este blog, y con sus 20,000 visitas, no cabe ni la menor duda de mi motivación a seguir posteando e investigando sobre temas relacionados con la Biomimética. Sin embargo en mí andar y complementando mi tesis de maestría he colisionado con una nueva y profunda visión: “Que aunque el planeta no nos necesita, debemos comenzar a percibirlo y co-evolucionar con las demás especies”. A summer camping is comfortable to escape the confinement rules. The essential thing is the tent, but above all a very functional: easy to assemble, hydrophobic and assured. These examples illustrate tents inspired by the study cocoons (pupae): structures and mechanisms as natural strategy of some species of animals that use the functional features mentioned.

Crafts have the potential to sensitize our way of thinking and acting with nature not only to abstract nature’s language through biomimetically conceived objects but to create a real, alternative biophilic economy where love, spirituality, creativity, community, simplicity and care of a healthy planet are paramount. Where deep sustainability is not only possible but achievable. This symbiotic vision of the world can be promoted by the new crafts movement.
Ted Muehling work shows clearly how nature inspire his work. Form and function, hand work, noble materials and processes goes beyond a simple consumer products to seeing a the real Natural Design.
Los oficios tienen todo el potencial para sensibilizar nuestra forma de actuar de de pensar junto con la naturaleza, no solo abstrayendo su lenguage concebido en objetos biomimeticos si no creando una real y alternativa economia biofilica donde el amor, espirutualidad, comunidad, simplicidad y el cuidado de la salud por la tierra son las premisas. Asi mimso una sustentabilidad profunda lo pueden hacer posible. Esta nueva vision simbiotica del mundo puede ser promovida por un nuevo movimiento en los oficios.
El trabajo de Ted Muehling nos muestra claramente su inspiracion. Forma y funcion, trabajo a mano, materiales y procesos nobles van mas alla de simples productos de consumo observando el real Diseno Natural.
This examples shows how architecture begins to implement new processes leading to a new philosophy on changing environment. A symbiotic architecture is a Nature’s reflection, in where 2 or more elements interact and depend each other creating conditions conductive to life. The “Symbiotic Design” is the next step to make visible sustainable and ecological elements in all projects susceptible to change our environment guiding for mutualism or reconnection.
Estos ejemplos muestran como la arquitectura esta comenzando a integrar nuevos procesos hacia una nueva filosofia en la modificacion del ambiente. Una arquitectura simbiotica es reflejo de la Naturaleza, en donde 2 o mas elementos dependen entre si para crear las condiciones de vida adecuadas al interactuar. El “Diseno Simbiotico” es el siguiente paso que se dara haciendo visibles elementos sustentables y ecologicos en todos aquellos proyectos suseptibles de modificar nuestro medio ambiente y guiarlos a un mutualismo o reconeccion.
Manned Cloud is an alternative project around leisure and travelling in all its form, economic and experimental, still with the idea of lightness, human experience and nature life scenarios as the guiding principles. The spiral of Archimedes is the driving force of this airship in the form of a whale that glides through the air.
With the idea of a hotel for 40 passengers, most of the developments of sustainable air vehicles is based on this strategy. At the same time this whale zepp pretend a re-experience travelling, timelessness and enhance the consciousness of the beauty of the world and to experience spectacular and exotic places without being intrusive or exploitative. For me this project sums up a way of thinking that is the stake of tomorrow.
Manned Cloud(Nube Tripulable) es un proyecto alternativo para el viajar que integra de manefa formal, economica y experimental la idea de ligereza, la experiencia humana y el vivir con la naturaleza como principios rectores. La espiral de Arquímedes es la fuerza impulsora de esta aeronave en forma de una ballena que se desliza por el aire.
Con la idea de un hotel para 40 pasajeros, muchos de los desarrollos sobre vehiculos aereos sustentables estan basados en esta estrategia. Al mismo tiempo el zeppelin ballena pretende una re-experiencia en el viajar, sin medir el tiempo, aumentando la conciencia de la belleza del mundo y la experiencia espectacular de lugares exóticos, ademas sin ser intrusivo o generar explotación. Para mí este proyecto sintetiza una forma de pensar y viajar en el mundo del mañana.
